The social situation at McMurdo

I believe my roomate, the base Dentist (and only dentist on the continent to boot), summed it up brilliantly:

"Its a cross between a Fraternity house and frontier mining town"

Its an interesting mix of people, all ages, nationalities, races, backgrounds. Everyone is working hard either in the field or supporting the base operations, while trying to stay sane in this very hostile environment.

I'll have to see how I fit in to this crowd.

  • Totally fascinating, dude! W/ all that sunshine, figure you'll have a softball team organized in no time. How would you keep the ball from fracturing upon hitting it, I wonder?? Sounds like a heat transfer problem to me. A two month frat party where the sun never sets -- what's not to like? -oh yeah, it's minus a lot out there and they expect you to work. Also sorry to have missed the big send-off and very glad you like the tiny tunes machine. One risk there would be: it's white, and small; might be easy to get lost, and how does it work w/ those nice arctic mittens? Can you chain it to your self? Meanwhile, blog is EXCELLENT, pix much appreciated. Glad to have the news, etc., but you can keep all that cold down there w/ you.
